It's a long way to the top...

Updated: Oct 15

Jake Murray has been a regular at the REACH Across band sessions for around a year now. Here's his take on how the band have been getting on over the past few months.

By joining Reach, I have been given the opportunity to do many activities and events. For me the one that stands out the most is Band Skills on a Tuesday afternoon in our “Youth Cafe”. For me band skills is special because it allows people of all skill levels and musical interests to group together and experiment with different styles and techniques.

Recently in Band skills, we have been having a lot of great sessions, we have been performing and practiced songs such as: “Are you gonna be my girl – Jet”, “In Bloom - Nirvana”, “Come Together – The Beatles”, “Hot to go – Chappel Roan” and more.... We have been discussing our opinions and ideas on the next songs we should begin to play. We have decided to begin, “Psycho Killer – Talking Heads”, “I want to break free – Queen” and most recently “Wanted dead or alive – Bon Jovi”

My favourite song by far is “Are you gonna be my girl – Jet”, this is because of the amazing vocals, the great guitar riff and the fast-paced drumming.

A group of six young people performing on stage as a band - two singers, two bassists, a guitarist and a drummer
Ryan, Dave and Josh have been involved in the REACH Across band for over 12 years, going from performers to mentors

This is all possible because of leaders Ryan, Dave and Josh and their encouraging attitudes towards learning new styles, songs, genres and techniques, providing us with the necessary feedback to continue to get better.

Band skills is a big part of being a member of Reach for me and I always look forward to going every week. We are trying to take things to the next level by performing live at upcoming events, we have however done this before within small parties/events with reach and on many occasions at an open mic at our club nights.
